During the month of August 2019 I was successful enough to get the opportunity to be a photography intern at the brand Skinnydip London. I have followed this brand for several years, and personally they have always been a brand I’ve admired aesthetic wise, their fun, playful designs and striking graphics are successful with the Millennial/ Gen Z demographic because Skinnydip listen to what their audience want and who they’re following.
Previously I have always enjoyed shoots and the process of their importance when affirming a brand. Seeing behind the scenes from an industry perspective has expanded my knowledge and skill set, I worked on the photoshoots for Skinnydip’s Mean Girls collaboration, AW19 launch and ecomm- all very different, fast paced shoots. Working on location compared to in the studio is always more challenging but it has the luxury of taking the shoot and giving it more personality then you ever could in a studio.
Key roles I gained experience in, was creating the styling boards for reference in the photoshoots, product gathering from store, admin and the offices to ensure that everything is ready to go on the shoots days- without this there wouldn’t be a shoot. Equally I’ve helped out the photographer on set with the reflectors for lighting and the stylist on location ensure that all clothes are ready to be put on the model and offering my style point of view. Once the photoshoots are over I am responsible for returning all products to their previous homes and returning clothing the stylist used to various retailers. Equally I’ve helped out the graphics team with Skinnydip’s ‘back to uni’ addition making sure it attracted new and returning students to Skinnydip for their supplies. Personally I’ve discovered I love physically being creative and more hands on creative tasks like graphic design or photography.
I feel I’ve gained a good understanding of industry practice which with my degree makes me a more rounded creative. I’ve built my network and become used to travelling in London for work making it easier for any future opportunities within London.
